ALBUQUERQUE – Get on your bikes and ride! Albuquerque has once again been awarded for being one of the best cities in the nation for cycling. On Wednesday, Bicycle Friendly America named Albuquerque a Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community for the second time after a four-year analysis.
“Our City has invested in bicycle infrastructure for decades and we continue to invest as we create more bike lanes, protected bike lanes, and of course the Rail Trail which will be a world-class bicycling facility,” said Mayor Tim Keller.“Making our City welcoming for cyclists not only encourages families to get up and active outdoors, but it also helps to make us a greener community—helping folks ditch the car for the commute in favor of their bikes.”
Every 4 years the League of American Bicyclists surveys cities and ranks them based on the 5 E’s of bicycling: engineering, education, encouragement, evaluation and planning, and equity and accessibility. Albuquerque scored as one of the most friendly cities for riding a bicycle in the nation by the League’s Bicycle Friendly America program.
The city was recognized for adopting it Vision Zero Action Plan, providing services like the Esperanza Bicycle Safety Education Center, Bike Thru Burque events, and for following our Complete Streets roads plan.
“We have been working hard to maintain our Silver level accreditation and we’re aiming for Gold in 2028, when we next apply” said Valerie Hermanson, Senior Transportation Planner. “The City Council recently passed our Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan, and that will help us meet our long-range goals to becoming Gold certified in 2028.”
The next evaluation period will end in 2028. Albuquerque’s scorecard is available at: https://bikeleague.org/wp-content/uploads/bfareportcards/bfc/2024/Albuquerque_NM.pdf (ALSO ATTACHED)
