Sunport to Smithsonian: ABQ Takes Off with New Dulles Flight

United’s nonstop route makes it easy to swap desert skies for capital vibes

ALBUQUERQUE — Today, officials from the City of Albuquerque and the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) celebrated a major milestone with the successful launch of its inaugural nonstop flight to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), marking a significant expansion in connectivity between New Mexico and the East Coast.

United Airlines flight 1706 touched down at the Sunport this morning, marking the official start of the airline’s new service to the region. Later in the day, a similarly full outbound flight departed, highlighting the strong demand and added convenience for both business and leisure travelers. Sunport staff and airline representatives also gathered at the gate to take part in the inaugural flight celebration.

“This new nonstop route strengthens the Duke City’s ties to our nation’s capital and enhances our position as a gateway to the Southwest,” said Aviation Director Richard McCurley.
