Albuquerque nets top slot as “Best Large City for Film” by MovieMaker Magazine

ALBUQUERQUE – Albuquerque has once again been named the No. 1 “Best Places to Live and Work as a MovieMaker in North America” by MovieMaker Magazine. Albuquerque has consistently dominated these prestigious rankings for seven years running, including four consecutive years at No. 1 (2019-2022). Since the magazine launched the list in 2001, no other city has achieved the top ranking for four consecutive years.

“Albuquerque’s ongoing recognition on MovieMaker’s list showcases the outstanding infrastructure, world-class crews, and dynamic community that continue to draw productions to our city,” said Albuquerque Film Office Liaison Cyndy McCrossen. “As Albuquerque’s film industry grows, so does its reputation as a premier North American production hub.”

“When you consider the incredible supply of talent in our community, enchanting scenery, and the exceptional quality of life that that filmmakers and their families have come to enjoy here, no other city comes close,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “There are so many iconic productions made right here Albuquerque, and we continue to be a major player in the film industry.”

In fiscal year 2024, film, television, and digital media productions operating in New Mexico generated nearly $740 million in spending. Many of these productions were filmed in Albuquerque, including Universal Pictures feature Him (produced by Jordan Peele), season 3 of FOX’s The Cleaning Lady, HBO Max’s Duster, Netflix series Ransom Canyon, and season 2 of Nickelodeon’s A Really Loud House. The film industry in New Mexico now supports over 8,000 jobs statewide, with a median wage for film workers exceeding $35 an hour.

MovieMaker’s annual rankings are determined through surveys, production spending, tax incentives, research, and, when possible, personal visits. Albuquerque secured the top spot, surpassing Toronto (#2), Atlanta (#3), Chicago (#4), and Calgary (#5). New Mexico’s success in the film industry extends beyond Albuquerque.

This year, MovieMaker ranked Santa Fe as No. 1 and Las Cruces as No. 8 in the Small Cities and Towns category, further showcasing the state’s robust commitment to its booming industry.
